Unity Breakfast
Monday, January 18, 2010
8
- 10:30 a.m.
UW Tacoma campus — William W. Philip Hall
This year's Unity Breakfast continues the theme of "Sankofa: Looking
Back, Moving Forward." We look back to recall Dr. King's message for us
to be "drum majors for justice" and to serve our communities. Addressing
the question of how the struggles of the past and Dr. King's call to
service relate to today's society will be
Dr. Terrence Roberts,
one of the African American children who integrated Central High School
in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. As one of the Little Rock Nine, a
civil rights activist, and recipient of the U.S. Congressional Gold
Medal, Dr. Roberts brings us his lessons from his new book
Lessons from Little Rock.
Helping us celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and its value for America
today will be gospel singer and producer
Jacob Bellamy and his Praise Team, and youth performers
of
DASH (Dancing, Acting, Singing, and Harmony) and the Mt. Tahoma Hip Hop
Group. A breakfast buffet will be served by Zack Hill
and staff of
Papa Eddie’s Catering.
After the Unity Breakfast, take the Link light rail to the Tacoma Dome
for the City of Tacoma’s Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday celebration at
11 a.m., which will feature UWT Professor Mike Honey’s video “Memphis
Strike” on Dr. King’s last campaign in 1968.

Corrine Bailey-Rae -
The Sea

CD Release (January
26, 2010)
Corinne Bailey Rae's new album, The Sea was co-produced by Bailey
Rae with Steve Brown, and Steve Chrisanthou, who produced many of
the songs on her debut album, which has sold four million copies
worldwide. Bringing together a new band of musicians, Bailey Rae
recorded the album mainly in Leeds and Manchester, England. Her
voice, always an expressive and soulful instrument, resonates with a
poignant and newfound depth on The Sea. Loss and grief are recurring
themes yet a sense of beauty and wonder ultimately radiates from the
album's dark corners.
